DNA gated photochromism and fluorescent switch in a thiazole orange modified diarylethene.

Thiazole orange-modified diarylethene (1) shows weak fluorescence but no photochromism in aqueous solution. When binding with DNA, the fluorescence of 1 is enhanced drastically and the photochromic reactivity is unlocked. This kind of DNA-responsive photoswitchable system can be used for imaging nucleic acids within cells.

Reversible molecular photoswitches: a key technology for nanoscience and fluorescence imaging.

I n recent years, molecular switches have attracted considerable interest because they hold great promises as molecular electronic and photonic devices. In contrast to commonplace switches that turn electric appliances on and off, molecular switches enable the storage of information on a molecular level, and their application in nanotechnology, biomedicine, and computer chip design opens up who...

Photoswitchable Spiropyran Dyads for Biological Imaging

The synthesis of a small-molecule dyad consisting of a far-red-emitting silicon rhodamine dye that is covalently linked to a photochromic spironaphthothiopyran unit, which serves as a photoswitchable quencher, is reported. This system can be switched reversibly between the fluorescent and nonfluorescent states using visible light at wavelengths of 405 and 630 nm, respectively, and it works effe...

Photocontrollable fluorescent proteins for superresolution imaging.

Superresolution fluorescence microscopy permits the study of biological processes at scales small enough to visualize fine subcellular structures that are unresolvable by traditional diffraction-limited light microscopy. Many superresolution techniques, including those applicable to live cell imaging, utilize genetically encoded photocontrollable fluorescent proteins. The fluorescence of these ...

Photoswitchable non-fluorescent thermochromic dye-nanoparticle hybrid probes

Photoswitchable fluorescent proteins with controllable light-dark states and spectral shifts in emission in response to light have led to breakthroughs in the study of cell biology. Nevertheless, conventional photoswitching is not applicable for weakly fluorescent proteins and requires UV light with low depth penetration in bio-tissue. Here we introduce a novel concept of photoswitchable hybrid...
